Despite turning down the opportunity to switch allegiance to Nigeria, there is still light at the end of the tunnel for the country to secure their players who have played for England Junior Three Lions at various level.
England U21 manager Aidy Boothroyd confirmed that Nigeria can still use World cup qualification to lure the likes of Tammy Abraham, Dominic Solanke, Ademola Lookman and Sheyi Ojo because their chances of making the English team to the tournament is very low.
Speaking to SkySports ahead of England’s U21 Euro 2019 clash against Scotland the manager said, “Nigeria are trying to get as
many players as they can and you can’t blame them because we’ve got some good players. Sheyi Ojo is another.
” It’s a hard one because I can’t guarantee they are going to play, as the group is so good.
Perhaps other countries might see that and
promise them the world and get them in the first team before you know it, he stated.
Abraham openly turned down Nigeria after he met with Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Melvin Pinnick on switching allegiance to the country.
Nigeria is on the brink of World cup qualification and that can absolutely appeal to most of these players in changing their nationality.
