Star Sixes: Nigeria lose to Del Piero inspired Italy

Italy continued her dominance over Nigeria as the Azzuri’s pipped the Super Eagles 2-1 in the Star Sixes tournament at the O2 Arena London. The Star Sixes tournament is a competition for retired legends of football.

Going into the game, memories of Nigeria’s second round defeat by Italy at the USA 1994 World Cup resurfaced. The second match for both sides at the tournament provided an opportunity for the Super Eagles to avenge that defeat. But it was not to be as the ex-Azurris pipped them by the same scoreline 2-1.

Italy’s Alessandro Del Piero scored first in the game while Stefano Fiore scored the second for the Azzurris.

Yakubu who scored a brace in the first game against China scored Nigeria’s only goal with seven minutes remaining.

Nigeria will face Brazil in its last game on Saturday while Italy are up against China.
