Nigeria probable XI vs Argentina: Akpeyi, Awaziem to start, Rohr to switch formation

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr for the first time since he took over the national team job will switch formation from his favourite 4-3-3 formation to a 3-5-2 against Argentina in today’s friendly game in Russia.

Nigeria will face Argentina for the eight time at senior level in an international friendly game at the Krasnodar Stadium in Russia at 5.30pm Nigeria time.

Home-based goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa will start from the bench, while Daniel Akpeyi gets another start under Gernot Rohr since his unimpressive performance against South Africa in Uyo.

Chidozie Awaziem will also start against Argentina for the first time since the home defeat to South Africa. The Franco-German will be starting with a three-man defence of Leon Balogun, Troost Ekong and Awaziem.

Shehu Abdullahi and Ola Aina will join the five-man midfield in a wing-back role in the new formation, Captain John Mikel obi returns to the line-up after he was rested against Algeria. Wilfred Ndidi and John Ogun retains their position in the lineup.

Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi will lead the attack against the Argentines.

Argentina have beaten Nigeria five times from the previous seven meetings between both countries at senior level. Nigeria managed just one win in 2011 with an emphatic 4-1 victory in an international friendly game in Abuja. Nigeria and Argentina played a goalless draw in 1995 FIFA Confederations Cup.
