The trio of former Super Eagles and Sunshine Star defender Geoffrey Oboabona , midfielder Nosa igiebor and Bright Edwonyi on Saturday failed to save their Turkish club Rizespor from going down to the second tier of the league.

Rizespor who has been blowing hot and cold since the beginning of the season failed to escape on the last day.

Rizespor needed a win and hoped Bursaspor lose in their final fixture against Ogenyi Onazi’s Trabzonspor to stay up. But it was Bursaspor who survived the drop.

Bursaspor, who had lost their last five league games, defeated Trabzonspor 2-1 to retain their top flight status in the Turkish Super Lig for next season.

Though Rizespor won their game against Super Eagles compatriot, Kenneth Omeruo’s club, Alanyaspor with Suleiman Koc scoring from the spot in the 45th minute but it was not enough to ensure their safety.

Oboabona, who joined the team from Sunshine stars of Akure in 2013 played the whole duration of the game.

Striker Edomwonyi was in action for Rizespor and was booked in the 54th minute of the encounter before he was replaced ten minutes later by Jakob Jantscher, while Igiebor came on for Suleyman Koc in the 78th minute of the defeat. It was Igiebor’s 13th appearance this season.

It remains to be seen if the Nigerian trio will remain with the team or move on.
