We conclude this weekend’s football action summary of Nigerian players across the globe, with Sunday’s key moments of our foreign exports.
China – Super League
It was his birthday and Super Eagles skipper Mikel Obi was on for 90 minutes in Tianjin Teda’s 1-1 draw away to Shanghai SIPG.
Mikel was yellow carded in the 20th minute with his side failing to hold on to an early lead.
England – Premier League
Alex Iwobi started for Arsenal who produced a delightful second half goal display to see off London rivals West Ham by 4-1.
Iwobi was subbed off in the 70th minute with Aubameyang taking his place, while Italian born defender of Nigerian descent Angelo Ogbonna saw full action for West Ham.
Italy – Serie A
Super Eagles midfielder Joel Obi was not named in the Torino squad that lost 1-2 to Atalanta due to injury.
Germany – Bundesliga
Leon Balogun was not listed in the match day squad for Mainz but striker Anthony Ujah was a 61st minute substitute as they lost 0-2 away to Augsburg.
Russia – Premier League
Brian Idowu was superb in the heart of the Amkar Perm rear guard helping them keep a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Tosno away from home.
In another game, striker Sylvester Igboun saw full action for FC Ufa who battled out a 0-0 draw away to Lokomotiv Moscow.
Igboun was cautioned in the 35th minute.
Spain – Primera Division
Relegated Malaga beat Real Sociedad by 2-0, they did not however count on goals from their Nigerian strikers Brown Ideye and Isaac Success.
While Success watched the entire proceedings from the bench, Ideye was brought on in the 78th for Maxime Lestienne, failing to add to the goals scored earlier on.
In another Laliga fixture, Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo and forward Imoh Ezekiel had a day to forget for Las Palmas as they were trounced 0-4 at home by Deportivo Alaves.
Etebo lasted the entire duration of the game while Ezekiel was pulled out in the 71st minute.
Belgium – First Division Playoff
It was a cracking game of football between Club Brugge and Standard Liege who both produced a frenetic 4-4 draw.
The let down however was the non appearance of either Nigerian, Denis Bonaventure (Club Brugge) and Uche Agbo (standard Liege) in the match.
Agbo was an unused substitute while Bonaventure was not in the match day squad for his side.
