Coach Bala Nikyu, who replaced Mohammed Baba Ganaru at troubled Wikki Tourists of Bauchi held his first training session with the squad on Wednesday evening and afterwards charged the players not to give in to despair but to see the start of the NPFL second stanza as a new season.
Nikyu who has been hired by the club’s new management team, parted at Katsina United only after a few matches this season for poor results following the team’s promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). Baldwin Bazuaye took his place and has guided the club off the drop zone to the 11th position. He summed up his experience to npfl.ng after the training in the following words which aimed to boost the players mentally.
“It is okay and the good thing is that from the way I see the players, they are in good spirit. Of course it is not a big challenge because I have seen teams that were third or second to the bottom ending the season up as third or second to the top.
“We still have a lot of matches to play and I think we will get seriously prepared for all the matches. In football all what matters is taking your chances – just win,” he concluded.
Nikyu is not new to Wikki Tourists grounds having worked at the club as an assistant to Ladan Bosso in the past and he expressed understanding of the frustrations the fans would be enduring since the indifferent start to the season after three seasons on high. He offered to return smiles to their faces.
“Nobody will be happy supporting a team that is down, so I want to encourage them that they should not feel it is all over.
“We have 19 matches to play and I think they will be surprised that out of the matches we will come out surprising everybody”, the coach assured.
A new board with Auwalu Baba Jada as general manager, Abdullahi Ibrahim Askia as secretary and ex-international Pascal Patrick as adviser was recently inaugurated to replace the former board led by Issa Matori. Other members are Paul Gambar, Engineer Bawa Abdullahi, Sadiq Yusuf Zaria and Umar Ahmed Illelah. They were charged to among others rescue the team from being relegated from the NPFL.
Wikki Tourists will next host Abia Warriors on Sunday as the second stanza of the 2016/17 NPFL season commences.
