Finishing in the top two promotion positions in the Southern Conference of the Nigeria National League this season is definitely going to be a well fought out battle by the league’s top sides.
Bayelsa United Coach Daboere Dokubo says the current NNL season is keenly contested and with thirteen rounds left to be played, no team can be sure yet of promotion.
Heartland FC leads a pack of six clubs all strongly with an opportunity to claiming one of the two promotion tickets but Dokubo is insistent no team is guaranteed promotion at the moment.
“Of course it is keenly contested. If you look at the table, at the position of every team on the log especially the first six teams, it can go to any two” Dokubo told journalists at the weekend.
Heartland FC has remained atop of the league table for a while now, a situation which has led many pundits to tip the Owerri based club for a quick return to the top flight from which they suffered relegation last season.
Dokubo however is of the opinion that it is still early days in the promotion race to think Heartland already promoted, as with thirteen matches to go to the season’s end, any team placed within the top six can still displace Heartland.
“Even for Heartland who are leading, it is not automatic.
“We still have games to play. We still have about thirteen games to play.
“With thirteen games anything can happen. It is keenly contested.”
After twenty one rounds of matches, Heartland are in number one position with forty two points, Delta Force follow with thirty nine points and Go Round FC are in third place with thirty eight points.
Fourth placed Crown have thirty six points while Gateway FC and Bayelsa United are both on thirty five points.
