NPFL: Enyimba, Elkanemi go top, Plateau held in Jos amidst fan violence.

Enyimba FC of Aba put in an impressive opening day display as they beat MFM FC 2-0 and Elkanemi Warriors of Maiduguri recorded an emphatic 1-0 away victory against Akwa United in matchday one of the 2018/2019 season of the Nigeria Professional Football League [NPFL]

The 2018/2019 NPFL abridged season kicked off on Sunday as six matches were played across various centers in the country with the other six postponed due to continental engagements and grace period for newly promoted teams.

In group A, goals from Enyimba duo of Nelson Ogbonnaya and Abdulrahman Bashir was enough to hand the people’s Elephants a 2-0 victory which helped them to the top of the group as the only other match held in the group, between Kwara United and Sunshine Stars, ended in a draw thanks to a 68th minute Seun Olulayo own goal.

In group B, a late Ba’akaka Azikoro goal handed Elkanemi Warriors a rare away victory over Rafael Everton tutored Akwa United in Uyo. The goal was courtesy of a goalkeeping blunder by Ojo Olorunleke and the late substitute was on hand to grab the decider.

Kano Pillars also recorded the same scoreline in Kano as they saw off visiting Heartland FC who are hopeful of redemption this season after a torrid 2017/2018 season that saw them finish at the bottom of the league table. A 16th minute Sunday Chinedu goal was enough for the Sai Masu Gida side to beat the visiting Naze Millionaires.

Plateau United frustrated their fans as they were held in Jos by visiting FC Ifeanyi Ubah and the irate home fans pounced on the referees to vent their frustrations, an action which the Nigeria Referees Association [NRA] condemned and sanctions are being expected to be meted out to the erring club from the League Management Company [LMC].

In the last game held in group B, a 20th minute Abdullahi Abubakar helped Nasarawa United to a 1-0 victory over visiting Abia Warriors in Lafia.

Matchday two will be held this midweek with all the promoted teams out of action as they complete their grace period and will be expected to kick off their campaign from matchday three which is slated for this weekend.
