NPFL MD 17 review: Rangers, Pillars falter, Plateau Utd go top

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 17 matches produced 23 goals across 10 match centres at the weekend with astonishing results.

Rangers International, Rivers United, Kano Pillars posted disappointing results away from home but Plateau United returned to the summit of the log after their home win and MFM FC scandalously​ lost in Lafia.

Plateau United laboured to a 1-0 win against Wikki Tourists in Jos. Reuben Bala’s 57th minute penalty secured the maximum three points for the hosts. The win sees Plateau United return to the top of the log with 32 points from 17 games, two more points than El-kanemi Warriors and MFM FC.

Enyimba International came from behind to beat Rangers 2-1 in the Oriental Derby. Daniel Etor put the visitors ahead in the 7th minute. Stephen Chukwude scored for Enyimba 10 minutes into the second half, in the dieing embers of the game, Mfon Udoh broke the hearts of the visiting fans with a late winner.

Akwa United and Shooting Stars encounter produced six goals in Uyo. Ibrahim Alhassan grabbed a hat-trick in the space of 16 minutes, while Ubong Friday got on the score sheet. Shooting Stars bounced back in the second half and pulled two goals back through Moses James and Taiwo Shittu but the goals could only stand as consolation for the Oluyole Warriors.

MFM FC fell like a pack of cards in Lafia suffering a 0-4 defeat against Nasarawa United. Adamu Hassan scored the first goal in the opening five minutes of the match. Yinka Onaolapo doubled the lead while Anthonin Oussou and Bashir Abdulrahman completed the emphatic win for the Kabiru Dogo’s tutored side. MFM dropped to third position from the top of the table with 30 points from 17 matches, two points behind Plateau Utd.

El-kanemi Warriors edged Kano Pillars 1-0 in the Northern​ Derby at the Maiduguri Stadium. Samuel Mathias second half goal was enough for the hosts to secure the win and move to second position with 30 points from 17 matches. Mathias scored his 9th goal of the season.

Sunday Adetunji’s brace helped Abia Warriors beat ABS FC 2-0 at the Umuahia Township. Abia Warriors compounded the Saraki Boys woes as they remain winless in their last five matches. Abia Warriors are now fifth on the log with 25 points.

Niger Tornadoes returned to winning ways after Matchday 16 defeat in Nnewi. Ibrahim Babawo scored a brace for the hosts while Lobi Stars got their consolation through Luther Iyorhe.

Meanwhile, Seka Pascal’s late winner ensured FC Ifeanyi Ubah defeated Sunshine Stars 2-1 in Nnewi. The first half ended goalless but Prince Aggrey soon missed a penalty early in the second half. Joseph Abbey shocked the home fans as the visitors took the lead in the 64th minute. Godwin Obaje levelled scores seven minutes later from the spot and Pascal’s​ late winner secured the victory for the Anambra Warriors.

Dufegha Eric came on from the bench and scored a late winner for Remo Stars against fellow promoted side Katsina United. Katsina United game plan to pack the bus almost got them a point in Sagamu. But Eric secured the win for the Sky Blue side with two minutes left to play.

Gombe United beat a Rivers United without their manager Stanley Eguma 1-0 to record their sixth win of the season. Idris Bakare’s 26th minute strike was enough for the Northern side to secure the victory.
