Sixteen goals, eight home wins, a draw and an away win characterized the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matchday 29 matches played at the weekend across 10 centres.
Sunshine Stars despite winning away from home on matchday 28 at ABS FC were stunned at their adopted home ground in Ijebu-ode, while MFM FC closed gap on Plateau United who lost on the road.
Nasarawa United recorded the 11th away win of the season, while Stephen Odey, Tony Okpotu, Ibrahim Alhassan, Godwin Obaje and Samuel Mathias increased their goals tally.
SUNSHINE STARS 0-1 NASARAWA UNITED
Sunshine Stars hopes of surviving relegation hit a setback after losing at home to Nasarawa United. The Owena Waves failed to compliment last weekend’s away win against ABS FC in Ilorin on matchday 28. The hosts dominated the encounter but the visitors were compact, Abe Sunday and Dayo Ojo hit the woodwork twice. Bashiru Abdulrahman became the hero for the visitors as his 39th minute goal sink Sunshine Stars at home.
ABS FC 0-0 RIVERS UNITED
Rivers United picked their fourth point on the road this season against ABS which ended in a goalless draw. ABS have now failed to win in five consecutive matches. The result pushed down the Saraki Boys into the bottom four.
MFM FC 1-0 WIKKI TOURISTS
At the Soccer Temple, Stephen Odey’s solo effort assisted by Chukwuka Onuwa was all MFM needed to dispatch a determined Wikki Tourists. Odey scored his 17th league goal of the season. MFM remain in second position and closed the gap on Plateau United to two points.
KANO PILLARS 2-0 RANGERS INTERNATIONAL
Two first half goals from Super Eagles defender Jamiu Alimi and Junior Lokosa helped Pillars defeat reigning league champions 2-0 in Kano. Rangers dropped into the bottom four from 15th position after the defeat.
SHOOTING STARS 1-0 KATSINA UNITED
For the first time in a long time, Shooting Stars moved out of the relegation zone up to 15th position. Jimoh Wasiu’s first half goal was enough for the Oluyole Warriors to edged their stubborn visitors 1-0 in Ibadan.
LOBI STARS 3-2 REMO STARS
Lobi Stars emerged victorious in a five-goal thriller of a match in Makurdi. Tony Okpotu put the hosts in front 9 minutes into the game from Ebube Duru’s free kick to score his 13th league goal of the season. Chinedu Victor leveled scores for the visitors four minutes later with a brilliant strike. Kinsley Eduwo restored Lobi Stars’ lead minutes before the break, while Ezekiel Bassey missed a penalty late in the first-half to make it 3-1. The visitors began the second-half as the better side and got their equalizer in the 70th minute. Awazie Ekene headed home to make it 2-2. Uchenna Eze saved the day for the hosts when he scored the winner with six minutes left to play. Lobi Stars moved into fourth position with 45 points, just a point away from continental position.
FC IFEANYI UBAH 1-0 ENYIMBA INTERNATIONAL
Enyimba lost their first Oriental Derby this season in Nnewi. Godwin Obaje’s second-half goal helped the Anambra Warriors pip an impressive Enyimba side. Obeje’s strike was his 11th goal of the season.
NIGER TORNADOES 1-0 PLATEAU UNITED
Samuel Agba’s first-half penalty condemned league leaders Plateau United in Lokoja. Plateau United lost their eighth away game of the season. Despite the defeat Kennedy Boboye’s team still maintain top spot with 51 points from 29 matches, two points above MFM.
AKWA UNITED 3-0 GOMBE UNITED
Akwa United bounced back to winning ways after last week’s 0-3 defeat at Plateau United on matchday 28. Gombe United were difficult for Abdu Maikaba’s team to breakdown as the first-half ended goalless. The goals later rained in the second half. Musa Newman broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. Goals from Ibrahim Alhassan and substitute Christian Pyagbara sealed the three points for the hosts.
EL-KANEMI-KANEMI WARRIORS 1-0 ABIA WARRIORS
El-Kanemi Warriors defeated Abia Warriors 1-0 thanks to Samuel Mathias’ penalty. Mathias who scored his twelfth league goal of the season scored from the spot in the 30th minute.
