NPFL Review: Plateau Utd extend lead, Sunshine win at Rivers Utd

Plateau United edged FC Ifeanyi Ubah 1-0 on Wednesday and stretch their lead on the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table to five points, while Sunshine Stars recorded another away win at Rivers United.

The NPFL matchday 30 matches produced amazing results with one away win, three draws and five home wins.

RIVERS UNITED 0-1 SUNSHINE STARS

Sunshine Stars recorded the 12th away victory of the season through a shock win at the Yakubu Gowon stadium. The Owena Waves secured back-to-back away victories and did the double over Rivers United. Thompson Ezekiel’s second half goal was enough for the visitors to stun their hosts in front of their fans. The result moved Sunshine Stars to 14th position on the log with 39 points from 30 matches, three points above the bottom four.

REMO STARS 1-1 SHOOTING STARS

Remo Stars and Shooting Stars shared the spoils in the Southwest Derby. Interestingly, both sides drew 1-1 earlier this season in Ibadan. The visitors took the lead in the 65th minute when Moses James put the Oluyole Warriors ahead. Awazie Ekene levelled scores for the Sky Blue Stars late in the game and broke the hearts of the travelling fans.

WIKKI TOURISTS 1-0 ABS FC

Harrison Madu headed home Idris Guda’s free-kick in the first half for the only goal and the winner of the encounter in Bauchi. Defeat for ABS plunged them further into relegation troubles in 18th position.

KATSINA UNITED 1-0 KANO PILLARS

Katsina United emerged victorious in the North derby to claim bragging rights. Martins Usule scored the winner in the 36th minute of the game after he headed home Nasiru Sani’s cross. Katsina United have now amassed 41 points from 30 matches, four points above relegation zone.

ENYIMBA 2-1 LOBI STARS

It was all late drama at the U.J Esuene Stadium, Calabar. Tony Okpotu put the visitors ahead in the 18th minute for his 13th league goal of the season and his 65th league goal for Lobi Stars. With seven minutes on the clock left to play, Enyimba mounted a comeback. First, Mfon Udoh levelled scores in the 86th minute, before Ikechukwu Ibenegbu scored the winner in additional time from a well taken free kick.

PLATEAU UTD 1-0 FC IFEANYI UBAH

At the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos Emmanuel James’ first half goal from the spot was all Plateau United needed to dispatch a determined FC Ifeanyi Ubah. Plateau United have now extended their lead on the log by five points, the Jos based club have garnered 54 points from 30 matches.

NASARAWA UNITED 2-1 EL-KANEMI WARRIORS

Adamu Hassan scored in each half of the game to help Nasarawa United secure three points against Northern rivals El-Kanemi. The visitors got their consolation goal through Hashimu Haliru in the second half.

AKWA UNITED 0-0 ABIA WARRIORS

Akwa United secured their eight points on the road this season in Umuahia. The visitors put up a brave performance and held their hosts to a goalless draw. Akwa United goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke on several occasions denied the hosts from taking the lead. Abia Warriors are now just two points above the relegation.

GOMBE UTD 0-0 NIGER TORNADOES

Gombe United were held to a goalless draw by Niger Tornadeos at home. The draw was the Desert scorpions fifth draw at home this season.

RANGERS 2-0 MFM FC

Champions Rangers saw off high flying MFM 2-0 thanks to goals by Chiamaka Madu and an Ifeanyi George’s penalty. The game originally scheduled for Wednesday was concluded in the early hours of Thursday morning after it was called off at the break due to heavy rainfall.
