NPFL Review: Plateau Utd lose, MFM close gap

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matchday 27 matches produced 17 goals from 9 matches. The matchday also witnessed astonishing results for home teams. The shock result of the week was witnessed in Lafia.

League leaders Plateau United stuttered on the road at El-Kanemi Warriors but the Jos based club still maintained their lead on the log, while MFM FC closed the gap on the leaders after a home win against ABS FC.

El-Kanemi Warriors Vs Plateau United

Sunday Anthony was the hero of the day as he scored a late winner for El-Kanemi Warriors to edge past Plateau United 1-0 in Maiduguri. The visitors thought they had one point from the game but Anthony headed home Chibuzor Okonkwo’s freekick in additional time to help his team grab the maximum points.

Despite the defeat, Plateau United remain top with 48 points from 27 matches, El-Kanemi moved one spot up from fifth position to fourth with 43 points.

MFM FC Vs ABS FC

MFM FC closed the gap on Plateau United with a 2-1 win over ABS FC at the Soccer Temple, Agege. Austin Ogunye put the Olukoya Boys ahead in the 17th minute from the spot after Stephen Odey was fouled inside the visitors box. Sikiru Olatunbosun doubled the hosts lead in the 66th, while Wasiu Alalade scored ABS FC’s consolation late in the second-half.

MFM FC maintained their second position with 46 points, two points behind Plateau United who lost at El-Kanemi. ABS are 14th on the log with 35 points.

Akwa United Vs Enyimba Int’l

Akwa United moved into third position on the log after piping Enyimba International 1-0 at the Nest of Champions. Musa Newman’s first half goal was enough for the Promise Keepers to earn maximum points from a difficult encounter. Akwa United now have 43 points from 26 matches, Enyimba dropped to seventh position after the defeat.

Lobi Stars Vs Rangers Int’l

Lobi Stars spanked Rangers International 3-1 in Makurdi. Ezekiel Mba opened scoring in the 28th minute from the spot, Kingsley Eduwo doubled the lead later on in the first-half. Tony Okpotu scored the third in the second-half for his 11th league of the season. Meanwhile, Daniel Etor scored Rangers’ consolation in the additional time.

Shooting Stars Vs Wikki Tourists

Shooting Stars eased their relegation worries with a 2-0 victory over Wikki Tourists. Ibrahim Ajani scored the opening goal in the 29th minute from close range. Bode Daniel doubled the hosts team’s lead late in the first half from a goal mouth scramble. Shooting have now garnered 32 points from 27 matches.

Sunshine Stars Vs Abia Warriors

Sunshine Stars also returned to winning ways with a 1-0 slim win over Abia Warriors. Abiodun Joseph’s 65th minute goal capped the day for the Owena Waves in Ijebu-ode.

Niger Tornadoes Vs Remo Stars

Niger Tornadoes compounded Remo Stars relegation woes at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja with a 1-0 victory. Peter Momoh did justice to Ibrahim Babawo’s cross in the 59th minute for the only goal and the winner of the encounter.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah Vs Katsina United

FC Ifeanyi Ubah defeated Katsina United 2-0 at the Ifeanyi Ubah International Stadium, Nnewi. Godwin Obaje opened scores for the Anambra Warriors from the spot in the 21st minute. Chijioke Alakwe headed home the second goal from Bright Onyedikachi’s cross in the 85th minute. Obaje has now scored 10 league goals since he joined the Nnewi based club.

Nasarawa United Vs Gombe United

Nasarawa United dropped valuable points at home to Gombe United as they drew 1-1 in Lafia. Oussou Antonin gave Nasarawa United the lead in the 21st minute, assisted by Thomas Zenke. The visitors stunned their hosts in the 71st minute as Sani Abbani leveled scores as both teams shared the spoils.
