NPFL Review: Rangers end El-Kanemi’s invincibility, drama in Akure

Matchday 23 of the Nigeria Professional Football League produced sixteen goals and some really interesting results much to the surprise of many even though only eight fixtures took place.

Reigning NPFL champions, Rangers International produced one of the shock results of the match round in their 1-1 draw against El-Kanemi Warriors, becoming the first side to get a point in Maiduguri in over two years. Daniel Etor gave the Flying Antelopes a shock lead in the 70th minute before substitute, Aghahowa Otakho equalised late on to deny Rangers a crucial win.

10-man Sunshine Stars fell 1-2 to leaders Plateau United at home in Akure. Sunshine led 1-0 at the break through Ezekiel Thompson but Plateau United came roaring back in the second half and were level after 62 minutes through forward, Emmanuel Odafe’s strike. Plateau United wrapped up the victory with a late goal by Chukwuemeka Umeh in the dieing embers of the match amidst player protests.

It was an Anthony Okpotu show at the Aper Aku stadium in Makurdi. The Lobi Stars marksman grabbed a first-half hat-trick for the home side in a 3-1 victory over MFM FC. Austin Ogunye’s strike from the spot was only a consolation for the visitors. MFM finished the game with 10-men, Uwaga Chuka was given his matching orders late on.

A Suleiman Usman strike ten minutes before the ninety for Gombe United denied Enyimba International all three points with both sides settling for a 1-1. Enyimba took the lead through Ikechukwu Ibenegbu ten minutes after the restart and looked to be heading towards nicking their second away win of the season before Usman struck.

Goals from Yaya Kone and Seka Pascal in each half was enough for FC Ifeanyi Ubah to see off newly promoted side, ABS FC in Nnewi. Victory sees the Anambra Warriors climb to second place level on 37 points El-Kanemi Warriors in third.

Abdullahi Wakilli’s penalty in the 12th minute for Niger Tornadoes condemned CAF Confederation Cup campaigners, Rivers United to yet another away defeat.
