Shooting Stars defender Samuelson Owono has considered the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 38 clash against Niger Tornadoes a must-win encounter.
The Oluyole Warriors will be visitors at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja, the adopted home ground of Tornadoes in Saturday’s NPFL final day fixture.
The five-time league champions occupy 16th position in the NPFL table with 50 points from 37 matches, same numbers of points with Wikki Tourists but ahead of Tourists with a better goals difference.
Meanwhile, Niger Tornadoes are also not safe. The Minna based club are placed 14th on the log with 51 points from 37 matches, just one point above the drop zone.
Remo Stars and Gombe United are relegated, the other two teams in the bottom four ABS FC and Wikki Tourists will travel to Gombe and Lafia respectively.
The Cameroonian born defender said to Naijafootballplus.com that his side need the match more than the hosts if their dream of surviving relegation will be a reality.
“It is sad we find ourselves in this ugly situation, 3SC have got great history in the league and this club should be competing for titles and not relegation. We are not happy with ourselves this season, “ said Samuelson.
“I think we did well in some away matches, we picked points in some difficult venue but our major problem was dropping too many points at home. After the FC Ifeanyi Ubah home defeat, I think we were able to improve our home performance and results against Enyimba, Akwa United gave us a life-line chance to fight for the survival.
“The reality for us will be in Lokoja, we have to fight and avoid defeat and hopefully other results favour us. It is also dangerous to leave our destiny in the hands of another teams, we have to win in Lokoja and that has been the communication among the group all week.
“A win will guarantee our safety, it won’t come easy but it is possible. It will be more difficult because Tornadoes must also fight to keep their top flight, they are not safe. We are battle ready for our biggest game of the season, this is our last chance to redeem our image and we will give it a big fight.”
