Monday night will be best remembered for the FIFA gala awards that saw Christiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid emerge the best player of the year, but some Nigerians were busy making some on-field impact.
Non less than Super Eagles striker Anthony Nwakaeme who returned amongst the goals for his Israeli club Hapoel Be’er Sheva in their 2-1 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Even though Hapoel went down to 10-men when Hatem And Elhamed was shown a straight red card in the 20th minute, their top marksman Nwakaeme whose goals this season prior to this match came in the cup competitions, came through with the opening goal of the night.
Nwakeme, 28, finally opened his league account with a good finish in the 62nd minute of play before Sahar made it 2-0 six minutes later.
A late goal from Maccabi in the 89th minute turned out to be a consolation as 10-men Hapoel hung on to secure all three points.
The win takes reigning Israeli champions Hapoel Be’er Sheva to 4th place on the table with 14 points from seven games though they have played a game less.
Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu was not dressed by Hapoel due to an injury sustained in last week’s Europa League clash against FC Steaua Bucharest on Thursday.
