The Nigeria Women Premier League resumed for its second round on Wednesday, June 21 with exciting fixtures across five centres producing thirteen goals.
And it all started with Heartland Queens’ Ugochi Osuji slotting home the earliest (or fastest) goal of the season yet from the penalty spot in the 3rd minute of her team’s encounter against visiting Ibom Angels at the Federal Polytechnic pitch, Nekede.
This quick fire from the hosts was however literarily extinguished in the 24th minute when this season’s leading goal scorer, Charity Reuben, increased her tally to six with an equalizer for Ibom Angels. But that was not enough to secure an away point at least as Maduerosi Chinenye would go on to win the match for the home side 20 minutes into the second half.
With eight points from seven matches, Heartland Queens are now above Ibom Angels in Group A. And while Coach Eucharia Uche revels in winning her first game in charge of the Owerri-based side, her Uyo-based counterpart, Coach Whyte Ogbonda’s yearning for a win on the road lingers.
A tension soaked meeting at the Akure Township Stadium saw resolute FC Robo Queens hold their own strongly against the hosts, Sunshine Queens, but their hope of returning to Lagos with their third away draw of the season died a natural death after they conceded a penalty.
And substitute Winifred Eyebhoria made no mistake in her delivery when she stepped up in the 75th minute to seal the win for the Owena Mermaids.
In Group B, Anjor Mary shone like a million stars on her debut for Osun Babes against winless Sa’adatu Amazons at the Osogbo City Stadium. The former Abia Angels forward got the party started by converting a penalty in the 5th minute before completing her brace 20 minutes later.
On the stroke of half time, Kemi Abiodun headed in her first goal for the Omoluabi Queens to make it 3-0. Then three minutes into the second period, Edewor Precious added a fourth goal which coincidentally is her fourth for the season.
It seemed like an already downtrodden Sa’adatu Amazons tried to initiate a comeback with a goal from Alvin Dahz in the 56th minute but in the end, that was all they could mutter.
Group B leaders, Nasarawa Amazons succumbed to their first defeat in six games at the hands of Delta Queens in a match decided at the Kwale Township Stadium.
Rosemary Okezie opened the scoring in the first half before Remilekun Omamuli’s debut goal sealed the victory for the home side, thereby rendering Anam Imo’s effort, eight minutes from time, inconsequential.
Meanwhile at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Pelican Stars got their second round underway with a second win of the season as they beat Edo Queens 1-0.
Blessing Edoho scored the only goal of the match on 30 minutes for the hosts, but they still remain second to bottom on the Group B log.
