NWPL Matchday 9 Review: Rivers Angels back on top as Sa’adatu lose again

Just four matches were decided on Wednesday as the Nigeria Women Premier League entered Matchday 9 with Rivers Angels reclaiming top spot in Group A while Sa’adatu Amazons’ losing spree continued.

At the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, the Jewel of Rivers were kept at bay by Heartland Queens for a little over an hour before substitute Chioma Wogu broke the deadlock off a perfect Ugo Njoku cross. Cynthia Aku then confirmed the win six minutes later with another header off a Glory Iroka delivery from the right flank.

Coach Edwin Okon’s Angels could have gone ahead as early as the 10th minute of the encounter when they were awarded a penalty but Amarachi Ojinma fluffed it in spite of having the benefit of a retake.

Visiting Abia Angels were on a mission at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Surulere Lagos and with their goalkeeper Omini Monle planted like a solid rock in between the sticks, they frustrated FC Robo Queens every effort at goal.

The hosts had their hopes high in the 78th minute when Esther Ndubuisi finally found the back of the net but the goal was ruled out for offside. Coach Emmanuel Osahon’s team have now dropped points at home for the first time this season while Coach Ann Chiejine’s Angels succeeded in picking their first away point after being out of action for close to two months.

Meanwhile in Uyo, Ibom Angels failed to rise to the occasion as they played out a 1-1 draw against Sunshine Queens in front of their fans. Courtesy of returnee, Tina Oyathelemhi’s 40th minute strike, Sunshine Queens looked like they would run away with the first away win of Group A. However, Peter Udokpokong pounced in the 84th minute to salvage a point for the hosts.

For the only match played in Group B on Wednesday, Sa’adatu Amazons lost again. This time it was Pelican Stars that completed the double against Minna-based side, beating them 2-1 at home.

The other encounter that should have been decided on Wednesday between Edo Queens and Adamawa Queens in Benin was postponed because Adamawa Queens were attacked by armed robbers on their way to Benin at about 2am on Wednesday.
