Rivers United defeated Shooting Stars 1-0 in a matchday 26 Nigeria Professional Football League encounter played at the Yakubu Gowon stadium on Saturday.

John Odumegwu gave Rivers United the lead in the 21st minute when he bundled home a headed effort by Bolaji Sakin from two yards. The goal was Odumegwu’s’ first league goal for the Pride of Rivers since he joined from Plateau United during the mid-season transfer window.

Rivers United thought they had taken the lead within only just 2 minutes of play when Odumegwu fired home from an offside position. Linesman Felicia Obile raised her flag for referee Ephraim Iyorhe to chalk off the effort.

Having controlled the opening proceedings of the game, Rivers United took the lead in the 21st minute. Sakin rose highest to head Bernard Ovoke’s corner kick into the path of Odumegwu to bundle home.

Fifteen minutes later, Shooting Stars missed an opportunity to draw level. Ayobami Junior dribbled his way past Atuloma before seeing his right footed shot saved by Femi Thomas.

The second half witnessed a shortage of goal attempts but was notable due to Rivers United’s loss of defensive midfielder Emeka Atuloma. Atuloma faces a race against time to be fit for next weekend’s CAF Confederation Cup match against FUS Rabat in Port Harcourt.

Victory sees Rivers United climb to 13th position with 33 points while Shooting Stars remain in 18th with 29 points having played one game more.
