Enyimba International Football Club gaffer, Gbenga Ogunbote has called for supporters of the club to be patient with the striking department of the People’s’ Elephant citing his team is still a work in progress.
The seven-times Nigeria Professional Football League champions strike-force comprising of Ugochukwu Leonard, Ibrahim Mustapha and Mfon Udoh missed gilt-edged chances in the 1-0 home win against league leaders Plateau United yesterday at the U.J. Esuene stadium in Calabar.
The only goal of the match came in the 69th minute from an unlikely source, right-back Andrew Abalogu’s speculative shot from 20-yards was palmed into the net by Dele Ajiboye.
After the game, Ogunbote in his reaction to a question asked by Naijafootballplus concerning his strikers profligacy and how it almost cost his side all three points on the day, said: “The truth of the matter is that we have a challenge in that area and that has been a common challenge with all clubs.
“We’re still working on it until we get it right. I know sooner than expected we will get it right”.
Victory against Plateau United means Enyimba are only five points behind their visitors and just 2 points adrift of the team occupying the third and final continental league qualification position, ElKanemi Warriors, but Ogunbote quickly played down talk of a title challenge for Enyimba but rather stating the People’s Elephant is still a work in progress.
“The league is still far, nobody can say they have the title at hand or in their bag. Like I said last week, the twenty teams in the premiership every team in that log has equal chance of getting the first position.
“Enyimba is not an exemption and we’re still working, but one thing I know is we’re working hard to ensure that we finish in an appreciable position and you know what an appreciable position means to Enyimba”.
