Okon not wary of super four qualification

Technical Adviser of Nigeria Women football league side, Edwin Okon has emphasized that his primary target in this season’s campaign is to lift the title.

The Jewel of Rivers will host Abia Angels of Umuahia on matchday 12 of the Nigeria Women Premier League in Port Harcourt on Thursday. Should they pick maximum points in Thursday’s fixture, they will secure a spot at the Super 4.

Rivers Angels are currently 2nd on the log with 19 points, 5 points ahead of 3rd place Sunshine Queens who will be away to group leaders, Bayelsa Queens in Nembe before returning home to host the Port Harcourt side next midweek.

With Bayelsa Queens having the edge on the table on head-2-head basis, Okon has maintained that his primary aim is to retain the title the team won last season and has declared Thursday’sgame a must win for his side.

“It is a must win match for me and the team, so we just want to pick all 3 points,” stated the former Super Falcons gaffer.

“All we’re talking about for now is the Super 4 and not the group because that is where we’ll know who owns the league.

“We want to make sure we secure all maximum points against Abia Angels so we can qualify for the big one,” he added.

The Jewel of Rivers recorded her first away victory in this season’s campaign against FC Robo on Match Day 11 in Lagos, despite the injuries that rocked its defence line before the encounter.

Experienced right back, Ugo Njoku, center back, Gladys Akpa and midfielder Glory Iroka were all ruled out on account of injury while left back Mabel Effiom took ill.

Asked if he would use the same squad from the previous game against Abia Angels on Thursday, Okon said he’d only field fit players and nothing more.

“I don’t believe in starting lineups, that is why you can see how I’ve been rotating the team since the season started,” he said.

“We recruited quite a number of players this season and I go for whoever is fit for each game.

“If those that played against FC Robo maintain their fitness level this week, I may field them but if they don’t then I go for the fit ones,” Okon added.
