Nigerian players experienced a feast of goals across various European leagues on Saturday.
In Belgium, the game between Kortrijk and Anderlecht turned to a goal challenge between Super Eagles striker Henry Onyekuru who is on loan at Anderlecht from Everton and former Flying Eagles forward Abduljeleel Ajagun for Kortrijk FC.
Hamdi Harbaoui opened scores for Anderlect in the 23rd minute before Ajagun leveled up in the second half for the home side. Ajagun’s teammate Teddy Chevalier scored in the 58th minute before Henry Onyekuru made sure the spoils were shared even, with an equalizer in the 76th minute after coming on as a second half substitute.
Ajagun was subbed off with six minutes left while Onyekuru was yellow carded in the 89th minute.
Super Eagles defender William Troost Ekong scored his first goal for Turkish Super League side Buraspor in their 4-2 away win to Malatyaspor who paraded another Nigerian in Azubuike Okechukwu.
In Finland, Gbolahan Salami came on as a 76th minute substitute for KUPS FC but needed only 6 minutes to score the second goal in their 3-1 win over VPS FC. Salami’s Nigerian compatriot Gabriel Reuben was on from start to finish.
In the English Premier League, Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho made his first start for Leicester City since moving from Manchester City to the King Power Stadium, their was also a start for midfielder Wilfred Ndidi in their 1-1 draw away at Huddlesfied.
Iheanacho’s search for his first goal for the Foxes will have to wait for another time as he was subbed off in the 69th minute.
Ndidi lasted the entire 90 minutes of the match as usual.
Meanwhile Super Eagles winger Ahmed Musa was not named in the Leicester City traveling party.
In the English championship, Ola Aina played the full match in Hull City’s 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland. Aina is on loan from Chelsea.
Over in the German Bundesliga, Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun and his Mainz 05 team-mates had a day to forget as they were thrashed 0-4 by defending champions Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
Meanwhile former U-17 golden Eaglets striker Victor Osimhen made a return to the Wolfsburg bench in their 0-1 loss to Stuttgart, but that was as close as he came to the pitch.
In Russia, Aron Samuel was fit enough to return to the CSKA Moscow bench in their 2-0 win over FC Rostov after getting subbed off in their UEFA Champions League midweek match due to injury.
Chigozie Awaziem returned from serving his red card suspension for Nantes as they triumphed 1-0 over Caen in the French League 1 Conforama.
