Balogun, Ebuehi shines for club

Let’s take a look at the scorecards of Nigerian players on Saturday all around the European leagues where some outstanding performances were recorded by various players amid different results for their teams.

We begin in Italy where Simmy Nwankwo, 24, scored the equaliser for Crotone against Torino in a Serie A top flight. The Nigerian forward came in as a sub in the 76 minute and scored in the 81st minute beating England’s number one goalkeeper Joe Hart in Torino’s goal.

Still in Italy former U-17 and u-20 striker Orji Okonkwo, 19, scored the only goal for Bologna in a 1-0 win over Novara in the Primavera League. The goal was Orji’s 14th of the season and 4th goal in two consecutive matches following his hat-trick last weekend against Cagliari.

We cross over to the Netherlands and head straight to Ado Den Haag where super Eagles right back Tyrone Ebuehi lasted the entire 90 minutes for his team against Dutch giants and title chasing Ajax in a 1-1 draw. Ebuehi, 21, was excellent in defense, precise with his tackles and delightful in pushing forward from the back.

Still in the Netherlands, former Flying Eagles star Abduljeleel Ajagun hit
two goals for Roda JC in their 3-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam. Ajagun scored Roda’s first two goals in the 14th and 61st minutes.

Finally from Netherland, another former U-17 and U-20 Nigerian international Taiwo Awoniyi, 19, lasted 90 minutes for NEC Nijmegen in their 0-3 loss at home to FC Twente. Awoniyi is on loan from Liverpool.

Now to Spain, where Super Eagles left back Elderson Echiejile on loan from Monaco to Sporting Gijon was left out of the match day squad that lost narrowly to table toppers Real Madrid 2-3.

We hit Germany where goodnews finally came the way of Nigerian international central defender Leon Balogun who came in as a substitute for Mainz 04 in the 79’minutes as they beat Hertha Berlin 1-0. This was Balogun’s first appearance this year after a lengthy injury layoff.

Super Eagles invitee Sarenran Bazee after returning to training for Hannover was not listed for in their Bundesliga 2 match squad that won against Eintracht Braunschweig. Bazee has made 11 appearances.

In the far end of Russia, Fegor Ogude played for Amkar Perm in a 1-1 draw against FC UFA who featured Kehinde Fatai. Both players lasted 90 minutes.

Still in Russia, Aron Samuel could not score for CSKA Moscow who drew 0-0 at home to FC Rostov.

Finally in Portugal, Oghenekaro Etebo was on for 90 minutes as Feirense’s lost 0-2 away to Arouca.
