Ordega’s goal seal win for Spirit

Francisca Ordega scored her fourth goal of the season in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), helping Washington Spirit to a crucial 1-0 home victory over Portland Thorns on Saturday.

In front of 4,319 fans at the Maryland SoccerPlex – their biggest of the season – Ordega stole the show in the 19th minute after she took advantage of a poor pass between Celeste Boureille and Allie Long, stole the ball, and broke away for the goal that eventually gave the Spirit only their second all-time win against the Thorns.

Five minutes later, Ordega pressed forward again but the pressure from Thorn’s defence ensured her shot went off target.

Dazzling Ordega continued to pose a threat in Thorn’s box and had another opportunity in the closing stages of the match when in a 2 v 1 situation, Katie Stengel passed the ball to her for a shot, but it was saved by Adrianna Franch.

The result means Ordega has now scored in back to back games for Spirit as they extended their unbeaten run to three matches.

Spirit take on Boston Breakers next Saturday.
