Sunshine Stars forward, Ajibola Otegbeye has stated that he decided not to celebrate his goal against ABS FC in Ilorin at the weekend as a mark of respect for his former team.
The Akure Landlords humbled the Saraki Boys 4-2 in front of their fans at the Kwara Stadium, Ilorin at the weekend.
Otegbeye who joined the Akure based club at the beginning of the 2016/2017 NPFL season from ABS FC scored his side’s second goal in the emphatic victory.
“First-half ended goalless and the coach told us we must score first to earn positive result from the game. Luckily for us Alimi scored one minute into the second-half and we picked our courage with the early lead in the second-half.
“I got the second goal eight minutes after and I decided not to celebrate. I have huge respect for ABS and their fans, I cherish the moments we spent together. I recalled when we fought together to secure promotion last season.
“I was happy to score in front of my fans in Ilorin, some of them came to support me and I’m excited we got the three points,” said Otegbeye to Naijafootballplus.com.
The away win moved Sunshine Stars out of the bottom four. The Owena Waves now occupy 15th position with 36 points from 28 NPFL matches, two points above the relegation zone.
“The game was a tough battle as both teams are tactical with similarities in terms of formation and style of play. We knew it won’t be easy but we needed to win and move out from the relegation situation.
“It was an amazing game, been a while I heard about a game in the NPFL produced away win with six goals involved. I had to deal with emotions and the profession in the game, we knew a win would boost our survival hopes and we are happy with the results.
“It’s not yet party time and we haven’t achieved our target. It’s important we continue to fight and work hard, winning all home matches will be important and we shall hunt for more away wins, we must concentrate and stay focus,” he said.
Sunshine Stars will host Nasarawa United this weekend in the NPFL matchday 29 clash at their adopted home ground in Ijebu-ode.
