It was indeed a dramatic game of football in the Chinese Super League with Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo in the news for a penalty miss that in the end saw his team Changchun Yatai losing 1-2 at home to third placed Guangzhou R&F F.C in Saturday’s early kickoff.
Despite having less ball possession, Changchun Yatai were always dangerous as their favoured physical and wing play began to cause the visiting Guangzhou R&F lots of problems.
The pressure paid off early in the game with captain Odion Ighalo winning a penalty, which he however failed to convert in the 12th minute.
Yatai continued to look the more threatening side Creating high number of chances with their high pressing but Ighalo failed to find his scoring touch with some misses that deserved a better finishing.
Xiaofei Zhang deservedly put Changchun Yatai ahead in the 61st minute of the second half, but the lead lasted until the 78th minute when Eran Zahavi finished off to restore parity for the more composed Guangzhou R&F.
Guangzhou were lucky to get away with the numerous free-kicks they gave away around their box coupled with poor finishing by Ighalo and his teammates.
As the game seemed to be headed for a stalemate, high drama ensued when Rui Yu was shown a straight red card for Changchun who conceded a 90th minute penalty, that was converted by Brazilian Renatinho to hand Guangzhou the winner.
There was however time for some more drama in added time as Changchun Yatai surged forward and won another penalty which was also missed by Zhenyu Du to ensure the hosts failed to salvage a point.
Ighalo was shown a yellow card for his troubles soon afterwards, as Changchun Yatai after 4 games played remain 14th on the 16-team table with bottom placed Guizhou Zhicheng and Dalian Yifang yet to play.
Up next for Odion Ighalo and Yatai is a trip to Hebei CFFC next weekend, with the Super Eagles striker hoping to end his out of form showing for Club and country.
