Plateau United go top as Sunshine Stars win southwest derby

Reigning Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions Plateau United edged Rangers International 1-0 to go top of the NPFL table in a rescheduled matchday nine fixture played at the new Jos stadium.

With the match deadlocked, Chizoba Amaefule’s headed goal in the 77th minute sealed all three points for Plateau United.

At the Aper Aku stadium in Makurdi, Lobi Stars got the better of CAF Confederation cup campaigners Akwa United. Austine Ogunye’s solitary effort for Lobi Stars dealt a damaging blow to the Promise Keepers hopes of regaining top spot. The defeat was Akwa United’s third league loss of the season.

In the southwest derby played in Akure between Sunshine Stars and MFM FC of Lagos, it was fans of the Owena waves who went home with the bragging rights after they watched their team outscore MFM 2-1 on Wednesday. Sikiru Alimi opened scoring in the early exchanges of the first half via a headed effort, a lead Sunshine took into the break. At the restart, Nojeem Akinyemi drew MFM level before Tayo Adebogun scored from a free kick in the 78th minute to seal the points for Sunshine Stars who are off the bottom of the table courtesy of the three points.

All three matches were earlier scheduled to hold on February 18, 20118 but were postponed due to Plateau United, MFM and Akwa United’s participation in the 2017-2018 CAF inter-club competitions namely; the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
