The 2018 TOTAL CAF Champions League Kicks off with preliminary round of matches involving different teams. For Nigeria – Plateau United and MFM FC are the flag bearers in this year’s competition.
It will be a battle of common footballing rivalry between Nigeria and Cameroon, this time at club level when Plateau United [Nigeria] hosts Eding Sport [Cameroon] in Jos on Sunday.
Both teams face off in the first-leg of the round and share identical history. Plateau United won the League for the first time in the NPFL in 2017, while Eding Sport FC achieved same feat also in the Cameroonian league in the same year. Both teams will also make their debuts in the CAF Champions League.
Plateau United’s league effulgence puts them in pole position as favourites for this clash against the Cameroon champions, as the Nigeria league champions have started the 2017/2018 season brightly. They currently sit just a point behind Akwa United who are top of the early season league table after 7 matches played.
Ahead of the Game against Ending Sports on Friday, speaking to Cafonline.com, coach of Plateau United, Kennedy Boboye, said he has done his background check on Sunday’s opponents.
“I went to watch Eding Sport and I know they are a very good side that play compact football but we shall be ready for them.
“We are not worried about playing the first leg at home, the most important thing is to be able to showcase ourselves whether at home or away. We just need to play well and score some goals before going to Cameroon for the second leg.
“Last season, nobody gave Plateau United a chance in the league, but we were able to carry ourselves as a team; only few people are giving us the chance to do well in the Total CAF Champions League but I’m satisfied with the quality of players we have and we are going to give a good account of ourselves said Boboye.
Eding Sport have not played a league game in 2018, but can build on the success of their first league title of last season. Though their last game back dating to october ended in a 2-1 loss to UMS de leoum. Plateau United’s last match was a 5-0 mauling of Sunshine Stars in the league.
Form wise, Plateau have 3 wins and 2 losses in their last 5, while Eding Sport have 2 wins, 2 losses and a draw.
Both teams might not have met before, but Plateau United’s record at home and ‘chutzpah’ at goal sight, should prove too much for Eding Sport to stymie as the Jos based club should get a convincing win to hold before the 2nd-leg in Cameroon a week later.
