Real Madrid dominate UCL positional awards shortlist

Six current Real Madrid player plus Cristiano Ronaldo, now of Juventus have been nominated in the various categories for the 2017/2018 UEFA Champions League positional awards.

UEFA released a 12-man shortlist on Thursday consisting three nominees in each position from goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi also made the cut while Mohammed Salah (Liverpool) and Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) are the two English Premier League representatives.

According to UEFA, the awards will honour the best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward from the 2017/18 Champions League campaign, and will be presented during the 2018/19 group stage draw in Monaco on Thursday 30 August.

The players who received the highest nomination points from a pool of ther players are;

GOALKEEPERS: Alisson Becker (Brazil – AS Roma, now at Liverpool FC); Gianluigi Buffon (Italy – Juventus, now at Paris Saint-Germain); Keylor Navas (Costa Rica – Real Madrid CF).

DEFENDERS : Marcelo (Brazil – Real Madrid CF); Sergio Ramos (Spain – Real Madrid CF); Raphaël Varane (France – Real Madrid CF).

MIDFIELDERS: Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium – Manchester City FC); Toni Kroos (Germany – Real Madrid CF); Luka Modrić (Croatia – Real Madrid CF).

FORWARDS: Lionel Messi (Argentina – FC Barcelona); Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal – Real Madrid CF, now at Juventus); Mohamed Salah (Egypt – Liverpool FC).

In other news, UEFA also released a three-man shortlist for the 2017/18 Europa League best player award,  which will be presented during the 2018/19 group stage draw in Monaco on Friday 31 August.

Players who received most nomination points in this are:

Diego Godín (Uruguay – Club Atlético de Madrid); Antoine Griezmann (France – Club Atlético de Madrid); Dimitri Payet (France – Olympique de Marseille).

The positional awards will complement the UEFA Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year awards, which will also be presented at the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony. The three nominees for the overall UEFA Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year awards will be announced around two weeks before the awards ceremony.
