Remo Stars have become the first club to be relegated from the 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League season.
The Sky Blues relegation to Nigeria’s second tier division was confirmed after they suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Rivers United with four matches remaining to play.
They needed a win over Rivers United to keep their faint hopes of survival alive, but goals from Bernard Ovoke, Emeka Ogbugh and Esosa Igbinoba in the second half ensured Salefu Ochewuchi’s late strike was a mere consolation for the hosts.
The 3-1 win was Rivers United’s first victory away from home this season while the result condemned Remo Stars to the Nigeria National League.
After 34 matchdays, Remo Stars have only managed 29 points.
The Sagamu based outfit were one of four clubs to gain promotion to the NPFL but will start planning for Life in the NNL.
