Rivers Angels have emerged as champions of the maiden edition of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) champions shield at the Soccer Temple, Agege on Sunday.
The 2017 AITEO Cup champions defeated NWPL champions Nasarawa Amazons, 4-3 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time
Alice Ogebe opened scores for Rivers Angels in the cagey encounter in the 42nd minute from a goal mouth scramble. The cup champions took the lead into the break at the end of first half.
Amazons resumed the second half as the better side and dominated possession. Ejalonibu Adejoke levelled scores in the 58th minute for the Amazons.
In the 80th minute, Alice Ogebe thought she had doubled the lead for Rivers Angels but her goal was chalked off for offside in what was a controversial decision.
The atmosphere became tensed in Lagos, with penalties set to determine the winner of the inaugural edition of the champions cup.
Uju Joseph became the hero for the Cup champions as she scored the deciding penalty to make it 4-3 for the Rivers based club.
After the game, Rivers Angels head coach Edwin Okon praised his players for their amazing performance.
“I am happy my players fought hard, we could have won before the penalties shoot-out. I think our goal was wrongly disallowed.
“My players were able to put the wrong decision behind them, it was tough in the shoot-out. We got into the advantage and we missed the follow up penalty.
“It is a great feeling to be champions of the first edition of the tournament. I hope the league organizer would sustain the tournament, it is good to test our quality against such quality team before the new season,” said Okon to Naijafootballplus.com.
