Technical adviser of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma has hailed his team after they defeated Akwa United 2-0 in one of the rescheduled Nigeria Professional Football League Matchday 13 fixtures played at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium Port Harcourt, on Thursday.
Emeka Ogbugh put the Pride of Rivers ahead in the 30th minute when he converted a penalty after he was fouled in the box, before Malachi Ohawume compounded the visitors’ woes 18 minutes into the second half of the encounter.
Akwa United rallied to try to get back into the game but their effort proved abortive as the home side continued to press.
Rivers United should have gotten more goals on the day but forward Emeka Ogbugh was guilty of missing some goal scoring chances.
Speaking to the press after the game, Eguma said he was delighted to see his team claim all three points after the exhaustion of traveling by road to the far North where they played Katsina United.
“I commend my players for bracing up to get the victory today,” he said.
“You know how difficult it is playing a local derby. My team performed below par today due to fatigue, coming back from Katsina and playing another game in less than 48 hours.”
Eguma however explained that more work is to be done if the team must end the 2017/2018 season on a high.
“We will work on our lapses, especially having some rest.
“We didn’t have a good game in the first half because our midfield lacked cohesion, that was why we didn’t get early goals.
“We will work harder in our next game and ensure that we get a good game.”
Rivers United who move up to 6th on the log with 23 points, are home to Nasarawa United on Match day 17.
