Rivers United return to winning ways

Rivers United returned to winning ways after defeating ABS FC 2-0 thanks to goals scored in each half by Christian Weli and substitute Godbless Asamoah.

Christian Weli scored in the 38th minute in a game of few chances especially in the first half.

Asamoah who came in as a substitute for injured Weli doubled the lead late into the match to calm the nerves of the home fans.

After serving an in-house one-game suspension against Gombe United last Sunday, Rivers United Technical Manager returned to the dugout to motivate his boys but it was ABS FC who threatened to take the lead in the first half.

ABS winger, Adesina Gata missed a glorious opportunity to give his team the lead when he saw his shot from 12yards rattle the crossbar with Rivers United goalkeeper, Abiodun Akande beaten.

Less than 5mins later, United took the lead through Christian Weli who made amends for his poor first touch to score Rivers United’s first goal in four league matches.

The goal was Weli’s last contribution on the day having been suffering from a head injury as he was immediately replaced by Ghanaian forward, Godbless Asamoah.

As it was in the first half, ABS FC controlled possession of the ball and could have equalised through a header by Eugene Ossy but Akande tipped his goal-bound effort away to keep his side in the lead.

Rivers United punished ABS FC’s poor use of the ball in the 82nd minute when right back, Ifeanyi Nweke danced his way into the box and produced a cut-back which Asamoah tapped home to make it 2-0 and seal the victory for the pride of rivers.

With the win, Rivers United recorded only their fourth victory this season and climbed to 17th position but still have two outstanding games to play.

ABS FC on the other hand have now gone six matches without a win and remain in 13th place after 17 games.
