Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr has admitted that his team misses captain John Mikel Obi alongside other stars who have been ruled out of the 2019 AFCON clash against South Africa this Saturday.
Speaking with Sports Radio station, Brila FM in Lagos, Rohr said he’ll need to reconstruct the shape of the Super Eagles to get a good result against South Africa but it will not be easy.
”Without some of our important players in the team, we miss our captain Mikel Obi, who is injured,” Rohr stated
”We miss our goalkeeper as well. Also too we will miss a very important defender Leon Balogun who is not here, so we have reconstruct the team to beat South Africa, it will not be easy to beat them.
Asked to give his probable line up, the German tactician was coy on the issue not giving away any hints.
”It is very difficult for me to name my starting eleven from the 24 players in camp because everyone is fit and ready” Rohr concluded .
Meanwhile coach of South Africa Stuart Baxter made it clear his team were ready to upset the Eagles and pick a result.
“We know Nigeria are tough with good players but we came here ready to get a good result ”
Baxter was quick to play down the only win South Africa had against Nigeria in a friendly of which he was in charge.
“I am not one for history, it’s a long time ago and different circumstances. But if we aim to achieve similar result though”.
Nigeria has never lost a competitive game to the rainbow nation the only defeat in 2004 was suffered by a hurriedly assembled Rangers team that played a continental match within same proximity.
However, South Africa stopped Nigeria from defending the title in 2015, after the Super Eagles won the 2013 edition which coincidentally was hosted by South Africa.
