Rohr: We won against a very solid Poland side

Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr says his charges were lucky to come out tops in the friendly encounter which ended 1-0 in Nigeria’s favour against Poland in a freezing Municipal Stadium in Wraclow yesterday evening.

Speaking to reporters just after the game, the German tactician was of the opinion that the game gradually descended to a tumultuous affair with several tackles flying in as both sides showed their hunger to win.

”We were lucky to have won this game against a very solid Polish side. Poland created at least four good chances and we scored a penalty,” he said.

Rohr equally reserved special praise for young goalie, Francis Uzoho for garnering another clean-sheet on his full debut and keeping Poland star striker Robert Lewandowski at bay, while equally stating that the game was won in the absence of metronomic captain, John Obi Mikel.

”The opponents were better in the air. But our young goalkeeper, who first played for the Nigerian national team from the beginning did well. We won the match without our captain Mikel John Obi. Previously, we lost against South Africa without him.

”After beating Poland, the sixth team in the FIFA ranking, I warn against too much optimism. We will not be the favorite of the World Cup, even advancing to the knockout phase is uncertain” said Gernort Rohr.

Rohr also added: ”We will remain a humble team. In today’s game there were injuries to two players. It was not a ‘Friendly game’, no one wanted to let anyone go, both teams wanted to win, hence many fouls.

”We can learn from the European teams on the pitch, watch positions, discipline and organization. We must also remember that at the World Cup we will be one of the youngest teams.”

Gernort Rohr and his team would now turn their attentions to their next meeting with Serbia at The Hive Stadium in London next Tuesday.
