With Week 2 of the Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) having come and gone, we select the XI of standout performers.
So, which players earned their spot in the coveted NWPL team of the week?
Akarekor Rita [GK] – Delta Queens
Akarekor Rita’s performance was the reason Edo Queens could not score at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. The home side could have run up a cricket score if not for the outstanding starlet. The former Osun Babes goalie made herself big in denying Vivian Uwandi, Uche Ndefo, Peace Efih and Ogoma Joseph.
Lilian Cole [RB] – Delta Queens
The experienced defender carried her side on her shoulder in the clash with Edo Queens and secured a point in the game. Cole was very instrumental with her long accurate passes and free kicks. One of her forays upfront saw her almost handing Delta Queens the lead from a quick counter attack.
Mercy Joseph [LB] – FC Robo Queens
If any player made the day difficult for Bayelsa Queens’ players in the game at the Legacy Pitch, it was Joseph. The defensive abilities of the young lady were simply superb and her attacking prowess was just apt.
Esther Elijah [CB] – Osun Babes
Osun Babes grabbed their first win of the season against Pelican Stars at the Osogbo Township Stadium. Elijah rose up to the occasion by pulling the breaks on the skilful Chika Edeh.
Osinachi Ohale [CB] – Rivers Angels
Rivers Angels were determined to begin the season on a good footing and Osinachi Ohale was the chief orchestra. She was defensively solid and organizationally apt with her charges in the game.
Ramat Abdulkarim [CM]– Confluence Queens
Women football fans should watch out for this young lady. She was not just instrumental to Confluence Queens’ win over Nasarawa Amazons in Lokoja, she was tactically disciplined and stopped all the swift breaks of Amazons anytime they went on the counter.
Bashirat Amoo [CM] – Confluence Queens
Bashirat Amoo fetched the only goal of Confluence Queens which brought life back into the New Direction Queens who fought on to win 1-0. The playmaker displayed a Messi-like performance and capped it with a Messi-like strike to shoot her side side to second.
Marcus Grace [RM] – Osun Babes
Marcus Grace was full of energy and classy skills down the right wing. She was menacing and effective with her delivery. She has so far established herself as an influential member of the Osun Babes team. The youngster was voted player of the match in the win against Pelican Stars.
Alice Ogebe [ST] – Rivers Angels
Alice Ogebe scored Rivers Angels’ only goal of the game in Uyo against Ibom Angels. She was exceptional in an attacking role and tormented the home side defence on a number of occasions.
Monday Gift [SS] – FC Robo Queens
Emerging the player of the match in a clash between FC Robo Queens and Bayelsa Queens is not a fluke. Monday Gift’s goal was able to secure three points for the Lagos side and ensure that they maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
Ifeanyi Chiejine [LM] – Abia Angels
Ifeanyi Chiejine was the main brain behind Abia Angels’ positive moves. She was sharp and always appeared dangerous on the ball. The veteran stepped forward to net the first goal of the 2-0 win against Heartland Queens from the penalty spot. Whenever she touched the ball, the left footed playmaker drew wild applause from the fans. Injury forced her to be substituted.
