Technical Adviser Rivers United, Stanley Eguma has been issued a three match ultimatum to turn the fortunes of the Rivers side around or face further sanctions.
Rivers United General Manager Okey Kpalukwu confirmed the development in a chat with naijafootballplus.
Kpalukwu informed that a lengthy meeting was held Friday, to review the club’s form and it was decided an ultimatum be given to the technical crew to turn things around.
“We agreed the performance of the team is not good enough” said Kaplukwu.
“But then you have to consider in football that you win, you lose, you draw. Another thing is when you win you can’t win all the time.
“That however not withstanding, when you begin to look at the resources that is put into the team by the state government, there is need to make the fans happy at all times.”
Fans of Rivers United following the club’s non too impressive display for a while now, had of recent begun a campaign for the removal of Stanley Eguma as Coach.
Kpalukwu says though such a call might seem justified based on recent performance a whole lot has to be taken into consideration before such a decision is taken.
“Yes, the performance of the team has not been good of recent.
“We heard the calls for the removal of the coach but another thing is, you have to look at the time that the calls are coming.
“If that is done at this point in time, it is going to be very difficult for us to harmonise and blend the team with the new handler we might be expecting or ask to come and take over.
“These are the things we need to put into consideration while taking such a decision.”
The general manager says it was thus decided that in line with other decisions reached at the management meeting, that the technical crew be challenged to change the team’s form or far more reaching decisions will be taken.
“So we met and said well we have just few matches to go, so let us give an ultimatum and let us first warn the technical crew to sit up.
“Let them go back and then assess themselves and see the things they’re not doing right and take it up from there.
“If they bring in good results from the remaining games at least we’ll move away and we’ll finish well.
“So we gave them an ultimatum for three matches. Specifically the coach. Don’t win the three matches and face sanctions or other disciplinary actions.
“That is one of the decisions we took.”
Rivers Utd was recently knocked off the continent and fans of the club had hoped more energy would be channelled into the local league to help improve on a non impressive domestic campaign.
A loss at home in midweek against newly rejuvenated Sunshine Stars however heightened the calls for the removal of Coach Stanley Eguma.
United is currently placed sixteenth on the log and have two games in hand which they surely must wish could translate to guaranteed points in the bag.
Match day thirty one will see Rivers United entertain Wikki Tourist in Port Harcourt and all eyes will be on the Eguma led side to see how the first of the three match ultimatum goes.
