Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, Sunshine Stars have sacked their head coach Duke Udi nine months after the former Shooting Stars player led the team to survive relegation and got to the Aiteo Cup semifinal.
The 42-year-old coach joined Sunshine Stars from Osun United last season after Austin Eguaveon resigned as the Akure Gunners coach.
Udi, ensured Sunshine Stars finished 10th on the log with 54 points despite a poor first half performance in the 2016/2017 season. He also led the team to finish among the best four teams in the Aiteo Cup (Nigeria’s FA Cup) where they lost to eventual winners Akwa United in the semifinal.
A club statement read: “Following a letter received from the management board of Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) on misconduct and insubordination of the head coach of Sunshine Stars, Duke Udi. ODSFA and Ondo State Ministry of Youth and Sports at a joint meeting agreed that coach Duke Udi should step aside with immediate effect.”
ODSFA Technical Director Henry Abiodun has been directed to take charge of the technical crew of the Akure based club. Abiodun who is a trained coach in America holds CAF License A certificate.
Sunshine Stars are 17th on the NPFL table after 12 rounds of matches played. They had three points deducted from them earlier in the season by the League Management Company for breach of the NPFL framework and rules.
