Super Eagles invitee Mikel Agu has declared his readiness for the France camping and 2019 AFCON qualifier against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo next month.
Super Eagles Franco-German manager, Gernor Rohr has handed the Vitoria Setubal defensive midfielder his first National team call up for the friendly game in France against Corsica Senior team.
“It feels so good for me to be called up to the National team, it is a great feeling. I am happy I got invited to play for my dear country, I am honoured,” said Agu.
Agu has been impressive this season in the Portuguese League for Setubal since he moved on loan from Porto.
Agu added: “I stay focus at club level, I knew everything in life is all about time. I think this is the right time, the opportunity has come for me and it is important I make use of this chance.
“I can’t wait to join up with the team. The team have got plenty talents and players with top qualities, nothing is certain for any player. I have to go there and fight to stay in the team, I have to work hard and convince the manager.”
Late Rashidi Yekini emerged as Vitoria Setubal legend in the 90’s. He scored about 90 goals in over 100 appearances. He experienced some of his most memorable years with Setubal and eventually became the Portuguese League top scorer in the 1993-94 season after scoring 21 goals.
The 23-year old Delta born midfielder said he can’t be compared with Rashidi Yekini’s exploits at Setubal.
“No pressure on me to equal the big name Yekini made at Setubal. Yekini is a striker and I am a defensive midfielder. It is a two different position in football, goal scorers takes all the attention.
“He scored a lot of goals and he dropped a big mark in the club, he is a legend here. I have contributed a lot to the team and I believe I have impacted my own success story in the club,” he concluded.
