Super Eagles: Daniel Akpeyi ruled out of Serbia clash

Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has been ruled out of Tuesday’s international friendly game against Serbia in London.

The Chippa United goalkeeper who missed the Super Eagles friendly against Poland on Friday in Wroclaw due to visa issues from South Africa was expected to join the Eagle’s camp in London today (Saturday) ahead of the Serbia friendly.

A top official of the team divulged to that Daniel Akpeyi won’t make the game in London due to non-availability of his international passport.

“It’s heartbreaking that Akpeyi won’t meet up with the game in London. The players who missed the Poland game were expected to resume with the team in London today.

“Unfortunately, for Akpeyi his international passport is still at the Polish embassy in South Africa,” revealed the source.

“Akpeyi did everything but the embassy wasn’t fair to him, he spent personal cash to retrieve his passport after they refused to grant him visa for the Poland game. Sadly for him, Thursday was public holiday in South Africa and the embassy only attended to him yesterday and told him the passport will be available on Monday.

“He (Daniel Akpeyi) can’t meet up with the game on Tuesday and he has communicated with the Technical crew. Gernot Rohr will continue to work with Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa as available options.”

Nigeria contingent are expected to arrive in London this afternoon and continue their build- up to the 2018 World Cup in Russia with another friendly game against Serbia next week Tuesday.
