How Super Eagles players reacted to World Cup draw

Following the FIFA World Cup draw held in Russia on Friday which saw Nigeria drawn in Group D alongside Argentina, Iceland and Croatia, players of the Nigerian senior men’s national team have taken to social media to express their opinions on the outcome of the draw.

Nigeria will begin her quest to make it out of the group-stage for the fourth time out of six qualifications starting with a match against Croatia on June 16 before meeting Iceland and Argentina respectively.

On seeing the draw, Nigeria left back Elderson Echiejile says he is excited by the draw with the Super Eagles scheduled to play Argentina for the fifth time in six World Cups.

Mainz and Nigeria Centre back Leon Balogun described the group as a ‘challenge’.

Hapoel Beer Sheva and Nigeria midfielder John Ogu went philosophical after seeing the draw.

He said: “If you want to be the Best, you have to Beat the Best”

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr believes playing Argentina again will make things tough for Nigeria at the World Cup.

“We are in the last pot and we expected to be in group with teams ahead of us in the FIFA rankings, we have to prepare well,” said Rohr after the draw ceremony.

“Our first game will be against Croatia and we have to play a good friendly game, for example with Serbia because they played similar football. Our second game against Iceland, we have to go to the Northern part of Europe and get a good friendly game.

“We know about Argentina, they are a good team. This game will be more difficult than the friendly game we won, Messi will be available now. Iceland is a good team, they are strong and they have the best fans in Europe. They did well at the last Euros championship.

“It will be an interesting group and our last game against Argentina might decide a lot for us. We have to work hard and prepare.”
