With the Transfer window well and truly underway, and some Nigerian players gearing up for transfer from current clubs to new destinations. Let’s look at Nigerian players whose services cost their clubs huge fees to secure. Here are the top-20 most expensive transfers involving Nigerian players.


Ighalo scored 33 goals in 82 appearances for Watford before joining Changchung Yatai

1. ODION IGHALO – WATFORD TO CHANGCHUN YATAI- €23.3m

Odion Ighalo sits at the summit of most expensive Nigerian signing when he left Premier League side Watford to Changchun Yatai in China in February 2017 for a Nigerian record of £20 million ( €23m ) .

2. JOHN OBI MIKEL – LYN OSLO TO CHELSEA – €20m

It took more than a decade for super Eagles striker Odion  Ighalo to break the record fee Chelsea FC payed Lyn Oslo for the signature of Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi, whose transfer to Manchester United was hijacked by Chelsea backed by Roman Abramovic’s oil money in 2005 after an outstanding FIFA Under-20 performance for the Nigerian flying Eagles.

Mikel currently plays for Chinese side Tianjin Teda where he joined on a free transfer after more than a decade of successful service at Stamford Bridge.

3. AHMED MUSA – CSKA TO LEICESTER – €19.5m.

Ahmed Musa briefly broke Leicester City’s club record for the most expensive signing after moving from Russian club CSKA Moscow to the Foxes in the summer of 2016.

4. WILFRED NDIDI – GENK TO LEICESTER – €17.6m

Leicester City seem to have a thing for splashing the cash on Nigerian players. They followed up on signing Ahmed Musa with another Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi who joined from Belgian side Genk in the January transfer window.

5. YAKUBU AIYEGBENI – MIDDLESBROUGH TO EVERTON – €16.5m.

The Yak as bulky Yakubu Aiyegbeni is nicknamed, is one of Africa’s most successful goal poachers to have ever graced the Premier League. The former super Eagles forward cost Everton £13 million ( €16.5 million ).

6. OBAFEMI MARTINS – INTER to NEWCASTLE – €16m

Obafemi Marthins known as the weapon of mass destruction for his ferocious shot cost Newcastle €16 million from Italian giants Inter Milan.

7. ISAAC SUCCESS – GRANADA to WATFORD – €15m

Former Nigerian U-20 star, Isaac Success ranks 7th with a transfer fee of €15 million from Spanish La Liga club Granada to Premier League side Watford last summer.

8. EMMANUEL EMENIKE – SPARTAK MOSCOW to FENERBAHCE – €13m

Ex super Eagles forward Emmanuel Emenike comes in at 8th, moving from Russian club Spartak Moscow to Turkish side Fenerbahce for € 13 million.

9. BROWN IDEYE – DYNAMO KIEV to WBA – €12.63m

Another striker comes next in Brown Ideye, when he moved from Ukrainian club Dynamo Kiev to West Brom in the Premier League for €12.63 million.

10. AUSTIN OKOCHA – FENERBACHE to PSG – €12.4

Nigerian legend and mercurial skipper Jay Jay Okocha joined French side PSG from Fenerbahce for an impressive €12.4 million back then.

11.TARIBO WEST – AUXERRE to INTER – €12m

Former super Eagles defender Taribo West moved from French club Auxerre to Italian giants Inter Milan for €12 million becoming the first defender to make the list.
