It was a spectacular weekend of football for Nigerian players, especially the front men who had their shooting boots on and even created scoring chances for their team-mates.
Welcome to another episode of our top five Nigerian players of the weekend:
1. Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City)
Kelechi Iheanacho scored his first Premier League goal in two years and also his first for Leicester City to help fire them to a 4-1 win away at West Brom.
Iheanacho came on as a second half substitute to first provide an assist for Algerian Super star Riyad Mahrez before heading home the third goal in a complete performance for the forward who is gradually returning to form.
Iheanacho is an important member of the Nigerian national team coach Gernot Rohr team and has been invited for Nigeria’s international friendly matches against Poland and Serbia.
2. Samuel Kalu (Gent FC)
For the second time in seven days, left footed right winger Samuel Kalu makes it to the list of our top players of the weekend, this time after the 24 year old provided an assist before scoring the winner in Gent’s 2-1 win over Genk FC.
Kalu has now bagged 6 goals and 6 assists so far this season, making it one of his most productive campaigns that puts him ahead of his Nigerian team-mate and Super Eagles regular Moses Simon (who have suffered from injuries that has sidelined him for some months).
Kalu is really on the rise, but could he get a late look in by Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr?
3. Joseph Akpala (Oostende FC)
Our next player on the list is 31-year-old veteran striker Joseph Akpala who joined the goals and assists trend, but unfortunately his heroics ended in defeat.
Akapala set up Fernando Matos in the 27th minute before finishing off Richairo Zivkovic’s through pass in the 45th minute, but Standard Leige came back from 2 goals to go on and win the match 2-3.
It was a bitter pill for Akpala and Oostende to swallow after they thought his goal would at least earn his side a result against their much fancied opponent.
4. Alhaji Gero (Oestersunds FK)
Alhaji Gero scored the only goal that helped his Swedish side Oestersunds FK overcome GAIS 1-0 in the quarter finals of the Swedish FA Cup.
Gero’s goal made all the difference after coming on from the bench in the 66th minute and then scored the decisive goal with four minutes left to play. He has now scored three goals in all competitions for Oestersunds this season.
5. Aminu Umar (Osmanlispor)
Aminu Umar was on target for Osmanlispor FK, scoring his side’s first goal in the 17th minute to help seal a 2-1 win over Bursaspor.
The battle of the Nigerians in the Turkish Super League match featured Super Eagles right back Shehu Abdullahi and Mikel Agu who both played in midfield for Bursaspor was won by the Rio 2016 Olympic football bronze medalist Umar who has been in fine form for Osmanlispor.
That’s our five top players of the weekend and with the friendlies against Poland and Serbia scheduled for the Super Eagles at the end of the month of March, tell us who you think we missed out on and who should not have made the list in the comment section below.
