Action resumes in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with matchday 14 fixtures scheduled to hold across various centers on Sunday as teams continue to jostle for the league title.
With no continental engagement, all 20 clubs will be in action on Sunday and the four clubs still in the continent will try to play catch up as rescheduled games have seen them lose ground on the table.
We will look at the top five of these 10 fixtures scheduled to hold on Sunday.
5. Wikki Tourists vs El-Kanemi Warriors
In the only real regional derby for matchday 14, Wikki who are currently touring Jos will welcome struggling El-Kanemi Warriors who will be without Coach Imama Amapakabo yet again as he joined up with the Super Eagles for the pre-World Cup friendly games. Both teams have struggled so far and need a result but with El-Kanemi picking points away from home last weekend, Wikki might just have their hands full.
Prediction: Wikki 1-1 Elkanemi
4. Lobi Stars vs Rivers United
Surprise leaders, Lobi Stars of Makurdi have stunned almost everyone this season, rising from an opening day draw against Enyimba to sit on top of the table with one point separating them from second placed Akwa United who have played two games less. Rivers United have also struggled for results this season especially away from home which does not bode well with the team if they want to acheive anything this season besides just staying in the NPFL. Lobi Stars have gradually built on their part finishes in the previous seasons. Expect some dogged defending from Rivers United but they are very unlikely to survive Lobi in Makurdi.
Prediction: Lobi 1-0 Rivers
3. Yobe Desert Stars vs Enyimba Int’l
This season’s revelation, Yobe Desert Stars will host Enyimba at the August 27 stadium in Damaturu. Coach Babaganaru has galvanized his side which is made up of 21 new players and a few of the ones who helped them into the NPFL to sit fourth on the table courtesy of an impressive home form. However with Enyimba visiting, the Desert Stars will hope they inflict only Enyimba’s third defeat in all competitions this season. Enyimba might miss the trio of Wasiu Alalade, Ikouwem Udoh and Coach Paul Aigbogun but with the wealth of experience at the club, their voids will be filled.
Prediction: Yobe 1-1 Enyimba
2. Go Round vs Rangers Int’l
New boys, Go Round FC will welcome Rangers at the Krisdera Sports complex in Omoku. Rangers have as much wins as Go Round but with fewer number of defeats, they are nine places ahead of their hosts who are riding on the 1-0 victory over the defending champions on Thursday. Coach Ngozi Elechi might complain of fatigue after only playing on Thursday as opposed to their visitors who were last in action on Sunday. Go Round are gradually turning Omoku into a fortress and we can only wonder if the antelopes will fly.
Prediction: Go Round 1-0 Rangers
1. Akwa United vs Abia Warriors
In our game of the weekend, high flying Akwa United will host neighbours, Abia Warriors, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. The Promise Keepers who are focused on returning to the summit of the NPFL table are recently having goal scoring worries of their own, worries their visitors will feel they are overcoming in the last couple of games. A defensively organized Abia Warriors might be very difficult to wear down but as a derby of sorts, both teams might go for the kill at every opportunity they get.
Prediction: Akwa 2-1 Abia
