Top five Nigerian performers across Europe over the weekend

With another round of matches in Europe now over, let’s take a look at our top-5 Nigerian footballers who made the headlines at the weekend.

Taiwo Awoniyi – (Royal Mouscron)

Former Flying Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored his 8th goal of the season for Royal Mouscron in the 70th minute as they mounted an unsuccessful come back from four goals down against Anderlecht in an entertaining 3-5 loss.

Awoniyi, 20, is on loan from Liverpool, he was lively for the visitors and was a useful outlet in building up attacks.

Dennis Bonaventure (Club Brugge)

Our second top Nigerian performer comes from the same Belgian first division in striker Dennis Bonaventure, the Nigerian returned to scoring ways for table toppers Club Brugge in their 1-1 draw against Super Eagles defender Uche Agbo’s Standard Liege.

Bonaventure came on in the 63rd minute for Club Brugge who were staring defeat in the face, and took only nine minutes to level scores for his 8th goal of the season.

Bonaventure still only 20-years-old can play as an attacking left winger or an outright striker.

Samuel Kalu (Gent FC)

Samuel Kalu – the left footed winger that operates from the right wing, has been in rich vein of form for Belgian side Gent this season.

On Saturday he provided an assist Dylan Bronn to help his side come back from a goal down to eventually beat Waasland-Beveren 2-1 away from home.

When Kalu is not scoring, he is providing assists and creating numerous chances for Gent.

Ryan Sanusi (Sparta Rotterdam)

In the Netherlands, a not so familiar name Ryan Sanusi was also in the act of providing an assist. Sanusi laid the pass in the 20th minute for Julian Chabot to score the consolation goal for Sparta Rotterdam in their 1-2 loss to host AZ Alkmaar.

Leon Balogun (Mainz 05)

Finally to Germany where Super Eagles central defender Leon Balogun put out a solid display at the back for Mainz in their Bundesliga clash against Wolfsburg that ended 1-1.

Balogun is beginning to find form ahead of the World Cup in Russia after injuries threatened his season.
