UCL: Real and Spurs rematch; Chelsea, City make trips to Italy

End of October. Signals Halloween, start of the British Greenwich Mean Time, and way more obvious, the start of November.

But before October slips into the record books, it’ll signal the start of Matchday Four of the UEFA Champions League, the beginning of the second half of the group stage, where teams start booking trips for the knockout phase, and some shut the door behind them as they exit with a whimper.

And that’s the prospect facing Atletico Madrid in Group C. Last season’s semi-finalists and finalists in two of the last four campaigns, Diego Simeone’s side host Qarabag on Tuesday with only two points collected from three games, their worst group stage form since 2009/10, ehen they were eliminated at the group phase, but won the Europa League. And the Europa League would look like the realest prospects should they fail to win at the Wanda Metropolitano against the Azeri debutants.

Likely to be keeping an eye on the Atleti game are Group C duo Roma and Chelsea, who shared a 3-3 draw a fortnight ago, and meet at the Stadio Olimpico, Roma on five points while the Blues are two ahead. The last time the English champions went to Rome, they were thumped in 2008, a group stage game, on Matchday Four. Omen?

In Group H, Real Madrid and Tottenham meet again, after sharing the spoils at the Bernabeu two weeks before, with the prize of all but qualification for the last 16 awaiting the potential victors.

Elsewhere, Manchester City travel to Naples on Wednesday knowing a win would guarantee passage to the knockout round, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also wins away from qualifying in Group B, while Sevilla host Spartak Moscow and Monaco hope to re-ignite their European chances as they make the trip to face Besiktas in Group G.
