Udi, Okpotu bag NPFL monthly awards


The monthly best player and Manager awards organised by the League Bloggers Awards (LBA)‎ has gone to Lobi Stars striker, Anthony Okpotu in the players category, Sunshine Stars head coach Duke Udi is the coach of the month for July.

Udi came first ahead of Fatai Amoo of Shooting Stars, Fidelis Ilechukwu of MFM FC and Akwa United’s Abdul Maikaba who were nominated for the month of July.

Udi’s exploit for the Owena waves gave him an edge among other nominees as he guided Sunshine stars to four wins in six matches. The Akure outfit beat Abia Warriors and El-Kanemi Warriors in Ijebu-ode, ABS FC 4-2 in Ilorin and Rivers United 1-0 in Port Hacourt‎. Though they lost at home to Nasarawa United and Wikki Tourists in Bauchi. The former Osun United gaffer guided Sunshine stars out of relegation zone he met them when he replaced, Austine Eguavoen.

In the players category, Anthony Okpotu’s heroic performances for Lobi Stars earned him the award for the month of July ahead of Musa Newman of Akwa United, Godwin Obaje of FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Gombe United’s Sani Abbani‎.

His performances for the club also earned him a national call up for the home based Super Eagles that will prosecute the CHAN qualifier against the squirrels of Benin this month. His 14 goals this season has helped the Makurdi based outfit stay in the top half of the NPFL table.

He scored in four consecutive games for the Pride of Benue against Rangers International FC, Remo Stars, Enyimba FC and Katsina United‎ to claim the award.

Both winners, Okpotu and Udi will be presented the award at a later date by the LBA organisers.
