It was a crestfallen night in West London for Atletico Madrid, as Diego Simeone and his side exited the Champions League after just six group games.
Needing a win to go through, as well as Roma failing to beat Qarabag, Los Colchoneros struck first 11 minutes into the second half through midfielder Saul Niguez, but their joy soon turned to despair after Roma took the lead against Qarabag via Diego Perotti. It was no longer in Atleti’s hands, and 15 minutes from time they would see their own lead vanish, as an own goal from Stefan Savic ensured things would finish level, and Atletico will now prepare for a first Europa League adventure in five years. The turn of results also mean Roma finish top of Group C ahead of the Blues.
Whilst Atletico were feeling deflated, Swiss club Basel were in jubilant mood, as they booked their place in the next phase courtesy of a 2-0 win at Benfica. Raphael Wicky’s side would surely have had one eye on the other Group A game between Manchester United and CSKA Moscow, and at halftime all three sides were locked on 12 points, Mohammed Elyounoussi gave Basel the lead at the Estadio da Luz, while Alan Dzagoev put CSKA ahead at Old Trafford. The picture would change in the second half though, as Dimitri Oberlin continued his impressive form in Europe by adding a second for Basel, while United scored two quick-fire goals thanks to Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford, which meant a last 16 spot for Basel, while CSKA exit the group stage for the fifth season running.
Elsewhere, Juventus also confirmed their last 16 place with a win over Olympiacos, while Barcelona saw off Sporting, thanks in part to an own goal from old boy Jeremy Mathieu, and Corentin Tolisso scored twice for Bayern Munich as they ended Paris Saint-Germain’s 100% record in Europe, although it wasn’t enough for the Bavarians to claim top spot in Group B.
