UEFA Champions League Matchday 1: Barcelona and Juventus meet again; 2016 Europa League final repeat

The UEFA Champions League returns with the group stage round on Tuesday, with the big heavyweight clash undoubtedly being Juventus’ trip to Barcelona in Group D.

The Bianconeri, finalists last season, travel to Nou Camp, where they played last April in the quarter final of the previous campaign and knocked out their opponents 3-0 on aggregate.

Barcelona lost Neymar this summer for a record-breaking fee to Paris Saint Germain, and the French moneybags kick off their campaign with a trip to Celtic in Group B, where Bayern Munich will play host to Belgian club Anderlecht as well with Nigerian forward Henry primed to feature for the Belgian champions. The Bavarians didn’t have the best of European adventures last season, with a last eight exit at the hands of eventual winners Real Madrid leaving a sour taste in their mouths, and the aim this term is to win the trophy come May in Kiev.

Champions Real Madrid begin their title defence against Cypriot club APOEL Nicosia in Group H, as they bid to lift the title for a third successive season. Also in Group H, Tottenham welcome 1997 winners Borussia Dortmund to Wembley, where they’ve not had much joy of late.

Chelsea and Manchester United mark their returns to the elite club competition after a year out, with respective home games against Qarabag in Group C and Basel in Group A, while Liverpool, returning after a two-year absence, welcome Sevilla to Anfield in Group E, in a repeat of the 2016 UEFA Europa League final.

Elsewhere, Manchester City travel to Feyenoord in Group F, while Porto host Besiktas in Group G and Roma welcome Atletico Madrid to the Stadio Olimpico in Group C.
