There were some UEFA Champions League preliminary matches played on Tuesday night and versatile Nigerian defender Uche Agbo played a notable part with results around various centers suggesting lots to play for in the return legs.
Super Eagles defender Uche Agbo who has become a familiar sight in the central midfield position for Standard Liege, was pivotal for the home side who battled from going down to two first half goals against Ajax before grabbing a late equalizer to retain a strong challenge ahead of next week’s second leg at the Amsterdam Arena.
The Eredivise giants Ajax clearly got off the marks quickest with a dominant first half display that saw recognized names in former Real Madrid forward Jan Klaas Huntelaar and former Southampton tricky forward Dusan Tadic giving them a two goals advantage in the 19th and 34th minute.
The Dutch side could have stretched their lead even more but were made to pay for their misses when the Belgian side Standard Liege put up a better fight in the second half to grab an important result with a 90th minute penalty equalizer from Renaud Emond after Carcela Gonzalez reduced the deficit in the 67th minute.
Agbo who is still battling to fully break into the Super Eagles first team, was totally impressive with his tackles, interceptions and passing from the midfield.
In another game, Nigerian midfielder Bonke Innocent was not listed in Swedish club Malmo FC squad that were forced to a 1-1 draw at home to Vidi FC.
Meanwhile, Portuguese side Benfica managed a 1-0 win over Fenerbahce of Turkey.
