The Nigeria Super Eagles duo of John Ogu and Anthony Nwakaeme was the saving grace for their Israeli premier League side Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the first leg of the third qualifying round against Apoel Nicosia.
It was Be’er Sheva playing at home, but the Cyprus side looked a better side in the first stanza and took the lead through Nuro Muraise in the 13th minutes of the game from the penalty spot after a foul play by the host defenders.
They doubled their lead in the 28th minute of the game, which geared up Be’er Sheva players and halved the scores in the 42nd minute through John Ogu who finished up a fine assist from Anthony Nwakaeme.
The second stanza resumed with host being the better side and piled more pressure on the Nicosia defenders.
It paid off in the 70th minute with wonderful finish from Nwakaeme and ended the game 2-2 which gives a glimmer of hope to Be’er Sheva going into the second leg.
